Africa Startup Ecosystem Report 2025: State of Entrepreneurship
AOI flagship annual report: Africa Startup Ecosystem Report 2025: State of Entrepreneurship
The Africa startup ecosystem report is published at a moment of meaningful transition. The 2021-2022 funding boom followed by correction has separated companies with genuine business models from those riding available capital. The survivors have demonstrated resilience that favourable-condition-only companies cannot claim — and the ecosystem is more robust for it.
Funding Trends
Stabilisation at $3-3.5B annually with composition shift — later-stage rounds have contracted more than early-stage, reflecting greater selectivity about which companies deserve growth capital. Seed and pre-seed more resilient, supported by growing Africa-focused seed funds.
Founding Team Quality Improvement
Perhaps the most important and least discussed development: founders building in 2025 are more experienced than their 2015 equivalents. They have studied companies that scaled, have mentors who navigated the African startup journey personally, and have lived through the correction understanding that sustainable unit economics matter as much as growth rates. This improvement in team quality — difficult to measure but evident — is the most important signal of ecosystem maturation.
